What Does Your Credit Score Have To Be To Get A Store Credit Card?

  1. The old advice used to be that store credit cards were the first kind of cards one would easily get, since they usually have low credit limits and they usually have high interest rates. Especially places like Fingerhut, Radio Shack and gas cards. These days, I have no idea. I haven’t applied for a department store card in ages. Once you have a major credit card, you almost never use them anyway.

  2. Every card issuer has their own criteria now days, but they all are tightening up.
I recently got a card with my daughter as an authorized user because she is going off to college. This will also help her establish credit.
My credit score is 834, I have about 30 years of spotless credit and no debt. I still had to prove my income before they would issue a card!

  3. Sometimes your credit won’t even be looked at, depending on the store. I got an IKEA card and they never pulled my credit. However, it reports to all three credit agencies, under the name “GEMB/IKEA”. Best of both worlds, no inquiry and good reporting to all three agencies. Course, I don’t use it that often.

  4. Store credit card usually charges very high rate, I usually take advantage of the buying discount to get one and never use it afterward.
Months later, call and close it. The advice is not to get one unless you want to take % off your purchase.

  5. Store Credit cards require the highest score right now… something like 630 or so. Home loans through a credit union are around 580 or so. Yea, store credit cards are the hardest to get and require the highest scores.

  6. If your FICO is >620 then you will be fine.
